The marriage certificate for Henry Barnes and Charlotte Broughton does not record their fathers' names but evidence from Parish records and the 1841 Census strongly indicates that Henry's parents were Henry BARNES (b ~ 1786) and Mary BROWN. The 1841 census shows Henry (jr) and Charlotte BROUGHTON residing at the same address (West St, Oundle) as Thomas and Mary Barnes and it's likely that the latter were the witnesses at their wedding. Thomas was Henry's brother and Mary was Charlotte's sister, Mary. Thomas Barnes married Mary Broughton in the December 1839 quarter at Oundle (FreeBMD data).
Baptismal records for Oundle (transcribed by Keith Tinkler) record the following:
Note: According to the Dictionary of Western Australians (see Sources below) Henry Barnes (b 1820) arrived in WA (Fremantle) on the Berkshire (238 passengers) from England (Southampton) on 12 March 1855 with wife Charlotte (b 1820) and children Elizabeth (b 1847), Henry (b 1852) and Thomas (b 1854). Henry snr was described as "an agricultural labourer". Some of these birthdates are incorrect by 1 year because the passenger lists only showed ages and not actual dates of birth. A more recent publication Passenger Arrivals in WA 1839 - 1890 (published by the WA Geneological Soc) shows that Mary Barnes (12 years) also accompanied the family to WA.
It appears that Henry Barnes senior had a rather sad demise. He drowned in Torrens Lake. This might have been considered an unfortunate accident if not for a large rock found inside his shirt. It was reported to the SA coroner's court that Henry had been frustrated at being unable to find employment because of his age and had gone to sleep in the sun on a hot day in February on the banks of the Torrens River. He was reported missing and his body was found some days later. The coroner concluded that Henry had drowned whilst "in a state of unsound mind, the effects of a previous attack of sunstroke". Thanks to Julie Rowe and Ian Wheller for finding some of this information. |
