The instructors for the Monash University Aikido Club are provided through Aiki-Kai Australia, founded in 1965 by Seiichi Sugano Shihan. Sugano Shihan is currently based in New York and continues today as the World Aikido Headquarters (Hombu) Representative for Australia. Aiki-Kai Australia is an association of organisations from all states and territories. Aiki-Kai Australia is the accrediting authority for Aikido in Australia under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme, which is endorsed by the Federal and State Departments of Sport and Recreation. Aiki-Kai Australia runs classes throughout Melbourne (download list here). Monash University students and staff, and other members of the Sports and Recreation Association are required to join after their trial period. To assist with this, we have arranged a special membership rate of $15 per six months for joining Aiki-Kai (Australia). This is only available for full-time or part-time students of Monash University. This allows club members to take classes outside Monash University, to test for grade, and attend Aiki-Kai National Schools and other special training events. Classes at Monash count towards requirements for gradings, which are held four times per year in Victoria. Members of other Aikido organisations are welcome to attend the classes at Monash University but should discuss this with the Monash instructors. The Monash Aikido instructors are provided through Aikido Victoria and Aiki-Kai Australia. |
