Wombats Draw With Weasels
Game Date: 30/10/2002
Well, there were 2 things that stood out from this game. First was the surprisingly competent umpiring from Dirty Sanchez, and the other was the level of intoxication of inspirational team captain Damo. Obviously putting away a few too many over the honeymoon, Damo arrived 10 mins late and reeking, with alcohol seeping from every pore. Clearly this match was going to be interesting.
Game time was 9:30 and the opponents were the Cheezles. The 'Bats had scoring duties, so it was fortunate that both ex-Stem Boo!bags Britton nee Billing and Nicoleybags had turned up to help out. Sadly though, in a potent sign of post-marital laziness, Boo!bags set the tone for the remainder of her cushy married life by extracting $10 from Damo's wallet, buying a bag of snakes, 3 Freddos and a can of Vanilla Coke and heading for the balcony.
The 'Bats then slapped the ball around for a while before Sanchez, eager to get to the Ed to catch up with the ESLF lads, tootled the whistle and the game was underway.
Game 1 was a close affair with both teams playing some excellent volleyball. Kel especially was in excellent form and kept the rotation moving quickly with an inspiring display of errant serving. For the fashion conscious, the lucky red volleyball pants were again the keystone of her volleyball uniform. The opening game ended in victory to the Cheezles.
Game 2 was a repeat of game 1.
Game 3 was a repeat of game 2.
Game 4 was a repeat of game 3.
There were of course some minor variations, in that the Wombats managed to win 2 of the games after Damo snuck out and knocked off a few more Crownies in between games.
After the match, he was heard to say:
"Yeah, nah, we know we're a bit out of form at the moment, but we'll come back. We've had a tough draw so far, and it's a credit to the boys that we've played as hard as we have. We'll take a lot away from tonight, and rebuild for next week. We're just taking it one game at a time. We're happy to get the one point. It's a team building experience. It's just a credit to the boys that we done so well."
Strong words indeed. Thus the Wombats' season moves inexorably forward.
