Michael Field Sensei and Morihiro Saito Sensei in Iwama

Soke Morihiro Saito Sensei 9th dan spent more time with the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba O’Sensei, than any other student. He spent 23 years with the founder in Iwama and is the technical heir of Aikido. After O’Sensei’s death in 1969, Saito Sensei became the keeper of the Aiki Shrine and continued as the chief instructor in the founder’s own dojo. Saito Sensei is the headmaster of Iwama Ryu Aikido worldwide.

Michael Field Sensei holds a 5th dan in Aikido Iwama Ryu and a 4th dan in Aikido Bukiwaza, and is the headmaster of Iwama Ryu Aikido Australia. He studied Aikido in Iwama Japan as an uchideshi to Saito Sensei for more time than any other Australian. Field Sensei has been teaching Iwama Ryu Aikido in Melbourne for over 20 years and has promoted over 100 students to black belt.

A student to Field Sensei, Michael Farrugia studied Aikido in Fitzroy, one of Melbourne’s inner suburbs. He has participated in seminars taught by Morihiro Saito Sensei, Ulf Evenas Sensei, Hitohiro Saito Sensei, Hiroki Nemoto Sensei and Sabaro Takayasu Sensei.

Michael Farrugia began studying Aikido in March 1993 at the age of 18 and began instructing in Melbourne in June 1999 as a 1st dan. Awarded his 3rd dan in October 2002, he also holds a 3rd dan in Aiki sword and staff.

Michael moved to Adelaide to open Kihon Aikido in October 2003. An opening demonstration was held on 29 November and classes commenced on 2 December.
